Second desk review

In this step, the Scientific Editor evaluates whether the presented work does indeed contribute scientifically to its area, what is the relevance and pertinence of its subject at the current time, and whether it should continue on to the next phase (the double blind review).

If the article presents a potential contribution to knowledge in this field, the Scientific Editor writes a short justification of his or her decision and nominates two ad hoc reviewers. If the article is not deemed worthy of continuing in the editorial process, the Scientific Editor prepares a rejection report justifying the decision which is first evaluated by the Editor-in-Chief and then sent to the authors by the Editorial Office.

The RAE proposes that its scientific editors complete this desk review step in up to 15 days.

The publication rejection rate at this stage has been on average 25% in the past.
